North Augusta, SC, is a rapidly-growing city located in both Aiken and Edgefield counties, along the banks of the Savannah River. The river separates North Augusta from neighboring Augusta, GA. North Augusta, SC, is seven miles from Beech Island, SC.
Though the area had other names, it was incorporated in 1906 as North Augusta, led by the vision of James U. Jackson. In order to make the area accessible to Augusta, SC, Jackson built the 13th Street bridge. (The alternative Fifth Street bridge required area residents to pass through the slums of Hamburg.) Today, the 13th Street bridge connects the main downtown corridor of North Augusta – known as Georgia Avenue – to the downtown business district in Augusta, SC.
In recent years, the city of North Augusta opened SRP Park, which sits adjacent to the 13th Street bridge on the South Carolina side, alongside the Savannah River. SRP Park is home to the Augusta GreenJackets, a single-A minor league affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. The park is accessible via car, but can also be reached on foot or bicycle due to its close proximity to the Greeneway Trial, a popular 7-mile trail system built along the footprint of an old railroad system, now used by cyclists, runners and walkers from across the CSRA.
