Aiken, SC, is in the northeastern portion of the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA), an area encompassing a number of towns and cities in both Georgia and South Carolina that are in close proximity to the river. Aiken boasts a modern-day population of more than 30,000 residents, making it second in size only to Augusta, GA. (The two cities are approximately 20 miles apart.)

Aiken maintains a prominent equine culture, indicative of a historical time period known as the “Winter Colony”. For a number of decades beginning in the late 19th century, Aiken gained fame as a wintering spot for wealthy people from the Northeast, who were seeking refuge from the snow and cold temperatures of their primary residence. Many traveled with their horses, establishing organizations and clubs around equine activities such as steeplechase racing (Aiken Steeplechase Associate hosts events in the fall and spring.) and polo. This legacy has survived, and Aiken is still associated with all things equestrian. Notably, Thomas Hitchcock, one of the “Winter Colonists” donated a large parcel of land now known as Hitchcock Woods. Hitchcock Woods is the second largest urban forest in the United States, offering trail systems for horse riders and pedestrians alike.
