Beech Island, SC, is located in Aiken County, SC, near the banks of the Savannah River. Though now surrounded by larger towns and cities within quick driving distance, including Aiken (14 miles) and North Augusta, SC (seven miles), and Augusta, GA, Beech Island has a rich history. It is considered one of the oldest settlements in the state of South Carolina. It was established a trading post in the 1680s, where European goods shipped to Charleston, SC, via the Savannah River (known at the time as the Westobou River). Impacted at points by indian wars, Beech Island remained, shifting away from trade to agriculture.

Beech Island’s modern history began in the 1850s, when wealthy James Henry Hammond completed his residence, known as Redcliffe Plantation, home to three generations of his family. Hammond was a successful cotton planter, congressman, governor and senator, who spent his life defending the southern plantation system. In present day, Redcliffe Plantation provides intimate views into southern slave culture and 19th century southern architecture. In addition to the home itself, which visitors can view during regularly scheduled guided tours, Redcliffe Plantation also encompasses more than 369 acres, including the iconic strip of magnolias planted along the drive leading up to the home.
